Smart lighting done once, done right.
The Hue Starter Kit gets you from a dumb lamp to full-colour, app-controlled, voice-compatible lighting in roughly ten minutes. The two E27 bulbs are standard screw-cap. They fit most table lamps and floor lamps without adapters. Swap them in, pair the Bridge to your router over Ethernet, and the whole thing works.
The Bridge is what separates this from cheaper Bluetooth-only bulbs. It puts your lights on your local network, which unlocks the full Hue ecosystem: automations, scenes, and proper integration with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa.
Basic routines let's you automatically dim the light at 22:00, turn on at sunset.
The colour range is the full 16 million. Warm white through cool daylight, plus any colour the bulb can produce. In practice, most people land on a few presets and stay there. The scenes in the Hue app are well-curated, and you can dial in exactly what you want from a quiet warm living room to something more energetic.
The Dimmer switch is the piece most people overlook. It sticks to the wall without drilling, runs on a battery for a long time, and lets you control the lights without touching your phone.

What we tested
I've had this running in my home for over a year. The starter kit went into the living room, paired to a single Bridge and I even added a few other lamps.
Setup was straightforward: unbox, screw in the bulbs, plug in the Bridge, download the app, scan the QR codes. Firmware updates added a few minutes, nothing that required reading instructions.
The Dimmer switch has been next to our other light switches since we installed it. I rarely touch the app anymore.
The colour side: we use warm white (around 2700K) most of the time, but the colour scenes are genuinely good for evenings and movie nights. The transition from full daylight white to a warm amber at sunset, set on a schedule, is one of those things that sounds gimmicky until you've lived with it for a week.
Once the Bridge is on your network, automations are reliable. Lights come on at sunset and dim before bed without fiddling or cloud outages interrupting the schedule. That's the real value over going Bluetooth-only.
